Platinum Open Access

Swiss Medical Weekly, which began publication in 1871 as “Correspondenz-Blatt für Schweizer Aerzte”, is an international peer-reviewed medical journal following the Platinum Open Access model. Platinum Open Access means that the articles are published fully open access and that the journal does not charge any APCs (article-processing charges).

The quality of SMW publications is guaranteed by a consistent policy of rigorous single-blind peer review. All editorial decisions are made by research-active academics. The large number of reviews fills its pages with a wide range of cutting edge but also established themes.

The Swiss Medical Weekly is the official scientific publication of the Swiss Society of General Internal Medicine, the Swiss Society of Infectiology, the Swiss Society of Rheumatology and the Swiss Society of Pulmonary Hypertension.

Previous titles:

Correspondenz-Blatt für Schweizer Aerzte (1871-1919)

Schweizerische Medizinische Wochenschrift / Journal Suisse de Médecine (Schweiz Med Wochenschr) (1920-2000)

The Swiss Medical Weekly has played a decisive role in Swiss clinical research.

Supporting association

"Platinum Open Access" means the publication of scientific content without costs for the authors and without costs for the readers. The editorial and publishing costs are borne by sponsors.

In the author-pays model, the costs are merely shifted from the readers to the authors. For Open Access journals, APCs (Article Processing Charges) can become an attractive business model that poses a major threat to the independence of editorial decisions: the more articles accepted, the higher the income for the journal. The exponential increase in the number of so-called "predatory publishers" in recent years clearly shows the dangers of this new business model.

The Swiss Medical Weekly has pledged to follow the Platinum Open Access model. No publication fees are charged to authors. As a result, the only criteria for the acceptance of a manuscript submitted to the Swiss Medical Weekly are its scientific soundness, its novelty, and its usefulness to the readership. No other considerations play any role in the editorial decision process, and – crucially – all financial issues are removed from the equation.

A supporting association was founded whose purpose is to support and finance the Swiss Medical Weekly as a "Platinum Open Access" publication and to ensure the editorial independence of the journal.

The following institutions have agreed to join the SMW supporting association:

Swiss Academy of Medical Sciences (SAMS)

Swiss Medical Association (FMH)

University Hospital Zürich

University Hospital Basel

GZO Spital Wetzikon

Solothurner Spitäler AG

Faculty of Biomedical Sciences, Università della Svizzera Italiana
